Losing It – Your Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift!

Confession: I was never a big romance reader. I preferred stories of fantasy and adventure and was skeptical when it came to stories of love. Always the cynic when it came to relationships!

But I would always wonder just what was in those books my mom would never let me touch on her bookshelf – an entire bookshelf of Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, Sandra Brown, and others I’m likely forgetting. When she finally thought me old enough to give one a go, she handed me a Nora Roberts book, and I finally saw what all the fuss was all about. So I read just about every Nora Roberts book on the shelf, then moved on to the others.

In fact, as much as I am still a cynic, Nora Roberts’ Dance Upon the Air changed the way I looked at love It gave me hope. I still have that book (pretty sure I stole it from my mom. Sorry, Mom!) and it is one of my most re-read books.

I wrote my first romance novel last year, Damsel Not. While my heroine still holds that cynical and stubborn outlook that I maintain to the day, she also lets herself open up to the possibility of happiness. I wrote that book remembering how I felt reading one of my first romance novels: surprised, excited, pessimistic, and, well, a little giggly (hey, I was in middle school).

Giving Caster and Evangeline of Fragile Creatures their own romantic scene was a combination of all those things romance books made me want. I hope you enjoy it!

  1. My favorite would be Today Only by Derinda Love. It is a tear jerker, sobbing romance, but this book has stayed with me since I read it last year. I highly recommend this book!

    1. I haven’t read that one yet. Will have to check it out! I love books that stay with you.

  2. I like how you said your first romance read “gave me hope.”

I was a hopeful cynic growing up.

My step-dad used to sneer at my reading addiction and say it was all a fantasy world full of men who don’t exist. Well, he was wrong! Books raised the bar on what I expected from a man and I found him in France, married him, and dragged him back home! Fifteen year anniversary next month. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. That’s awesome! I’ll admit, books gave me pretty high expectations. It’s a good thing I didn’t meet Lucivar Yaslana (Black Jewel series) before I met my husband. That right there is a man had to compete with! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. For me, it’s a toss up between Pride and Prejudice (because Mr. Darcy = swoon) and Twilight (because it’s what really jump started my reading, plus Forks is such a beautiful book setting and I love the character of Edward). Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I love Pride and Prejudice! It’s my favorite Austen novel. I haven’t read Twilight but did see the movies – I agree, the setting is gorgeous. Perfect place for a love story :).

    1. Nice to meet you :). I’m bad at comments too – as you can see by my first reply, I couldn’t even figure out how to comment as me from my own blog.

  4. Silken Savage by Catherine Hart

I love this book because you have a beautiful woman kidnapped by a sexy Indian. He saves her from harm and she’s a spit fire who proves to him and his tribe, that she’s not a weak white girl. She can hunt and fight just like the rest of them….the BEST of them. I love the power couple they make and the trials they must overcome to be happy and together. It’s not your typical “Indian Romance Book”. It’s one of a kind. I love it so much I have one copy that I read over and over again. It’s falling apart. I was so devastated when this happened I bought another, just so I have a perfect one sitting on my shelf.

    1. I will have to grab a copy of this one for sure. My Cherokee heritage is a huge part of my life, so a story about Native Americans is right up my alley.

  5. It’s hard to choose a favorite so I’ll go with my favorite series, The Dark Hunter series. I love the build up of the romance with the characters and how they are the perfect compliment to the hero.

  6. Strictly romance I would have to say Patti Bergs Haunting Ellie it was an interesting spin and the build up was fantastic. I also enjoy Love & Chaos by Kf. Breene. Has a more contemporary feel and deals with present day issues. But one can never have too many historical romances either.

  7. My all time favorite would be “Gone with the Wind ” but there’s so much good stuff out there right now. But Gone with the Wind is what started my love of Romance novels

  8. The Premonition series by Amy A. Bartol because it has a little bit of everything. Paranormal, action, a hero that you swoon for, a villian that you love to hate but hate to love, and of course, romance!!!

  9. My favorite romance series probably has to be ” The Savannah Coven Series” by Suza Kates! I love it so much! It connects the magical world of Witches with the love of the heart! It bring 9 witches together that have to battle a great evil in each book as well as battle with the love they don’t want to give into. Please go check it out because I highly recommend it!
